Speech

In class, we have been delivering our speeches and mine is about trying to persuade people that women and men should get the same pay. I Iiked writing my speech out and I learnt that there is a 81.8% pay gap between men and women's pay.

Men should get paid more than women.

In many industries around the world, men and women perform the same jobs yet they do not get the same payment. Why is this do you think? For too long the attitudes, beliefs and behaviour of people affect the way men and women are paid differently. While the pay gap is getting closer, women are still being treated unfairly.

The gender pay gap is a high indicator of the difference between men and women. The pay rise is huge, there is an 81.8% gap in pay between men and women. The causes of the gender pay are complex. In the past, a substantial proportion of the gender pay gap was due to factors such as differences in education.

These attitudes affect not only the choices men and women make around paid and unpaid work. Differences in behaviours and choices can include men and women willing to discuss and aimed to reach an agreement paying conditions. But also the behaviours of others toward men and women who make choices that are not acting or done in the same way over time with these traditional beliefs.

Women and men have different patterns of taking action in the paid workforce for the most part because women spend a greater part of their time on unpaid and caring work than men. When women work part-time they are more likely to miss out on more challenging work and professional development opportunities both of which increase a person’s chances of advancement.

So women work just as hard as men which means they should get paid as much as men. So there should be no differences between men and women's pay.

Flash fiction

In class last term we were learning how to write flash fiction. Flash fiction is a short fast paced narrative and we had to use the words Rose, Music, and chain. Even though it is short, it was very exciting!

The Rose Necklace

I sit in the hospital waiting patiently with my step sister and her grandfather. He has been struggling with his treatment for brain cancer, it won’t go away. Her grandfather looks so much like my grandfather. I feel her pain watching someone you love so much have to suffer. It’s terrible.

My mind escapes me and I remember back to the time when my grandfather gave me his rose chain necklace before his death. He died from colon cancer. That was one of the saddest times of my life. I never wanted to experience that ever again. Just before he died, he said to me, "look after the necklace and whenever you feel alone or you feel sad, just think of what I would say to make you laugh." I remember these words, like music to my ears, and the look on his face when he spoke to me.

As I sit with my step sister and her grandfather, I see her eyes filled with tears. Her heart is aching. I find myself holding the chain and listening to my grandfather’s favorite song play over and over in my mind, wishing he was still here. But I can’t change the past. The past is the past and the present is the present. Life is never easy.
